# Dynamics: Particle Displacement

Displacement is the particles position at any given time. If the particle is going in a straight line the change in displacement can be expressed by equation 1 and the figure below.

(1)

s = Original Position from origin

s'= New position from origin

Δs = Change in position

Equation 1 only considers one direction. We however live in a three dimensional world. This means displacement in the x, y, and z-direction must be taken into consideration. This is done by using vector algebra and finding the magnitude that results from the change in direction of all three positions. Refer to equation 2.

(2)

xi = Position in the x-direction

yj = Position in the y-direction

zk = Position in the z-direction
